Our PB&J get togethers for the 08-09 school year are underway. We are rotating the location from Nipomo Starbucks, to Barnes and Noble in SLO, to Santa Maria. With the varying locations we hope that many new teachers will be able to attend these fun social events over the course of the year. Enjoy a couple Picture Books & a cup of Java, on us if this is your first time coming! |

On Nov. 7 and 8 we hosted seven wonderful children's authors (John Archambault, Teri Sloat, Terry Pierce, Alexis O'Neill, Greg Trine, Sherry Shahan, and Destry Ramey) for a special author event here on the Central Coast. On Friday they presented assemblies at local schools and attended a special SLOCRA sponsored dinner with 40 people in attendance at the Spyglass Inn. On Saturday they were at various venues around the Central Coast and ended their day at B Wise School Supply for book signings. The two-day event was well-received and enjoyed by many students, educators, librarians, and book sellers. |

As part of its international outreach, SLOCRA sent a box of new books to volunteers in Paraguay, who are working with children there. Here is the text from a note received from them:
What a wonderful gift we received from you about 2 weeks ago in the mail--40 Scholastic books, many of which were my favorites when I was young! I cannot begin to tell you what a wealth of resources those books will provide to many of the kids in our community--books are such a treasure to them and they will get hours of enjoyment out of reading them. Because books are such a rare and lavish treat here, we are trying to make a good decision about who and where to donate them when we leave in April '09. We are thinking of trying to start a "mobile library" with one of the local schools where teachers would be able to check them out and use them in class for a week or so before retuning them for others' use. If the project doesn't spark interest we are also considering donating them to the Peach Corps library as we know they will get taken to many communities that way through other volunteers. Either way, they are already a huge hit amongst our neighborhood kids, will be used for our reading camp this summer, and will find a great home when we leave. We are just so grateful that you would consider our volunteer service for your project, and we want you to know that your generosity is definitely being felt, appreciated, and put to great use opening doors to kids unaccustomed to the wonderful world of reading! We are forever grateful, and the kids of Barrio San Blás also send a "muchisimas gracias, nos encantan los libros!!" with many thanks and appreciation.
