Exciting New Things Happening in Career and Technical Education

A

rroyo Grande High School has a new ROP Culinary Arts program with instructor Tara Jones, who is the former owner of the Honeymoon Café in Pismo Beach.  Tara has taken on the task of starting this program from the ground up, and she is off to a great start.  She is energetic and excited to share her career field with high school students.  Jason Stewart is our new Automotive Technology instructor and is a former AGHS student.  He is very enthusiastic about his new teaching position and wants to share it with students by getting them excited about the automotive industry.

Nipomo High School has a new ROP Introduction to Sports Medicine class.  Ian Elwood is the teacher and the athletic trainer at NHS.  His passion for his profession shows every day in his new role.  The class introduces students to sports medicine, physical therapy and other health and medicine related careers. Students learn anatomy, physiology, emergency procedures, etc. which makes this a very challenging course.

Five Nipomo High School students are commuting from NHS to the Clark Center to take Rick Pierce's ROP Technical Theatre class.  Last May his class met with the Disney technicians responsible for running and operating all of the park's entertainment venues.  This is the second backstage tour of the Anaheim theme park that his classes have taken.  His students learn the many elements involved in producing live stage shows including lighting, sound, rigging, carpentry, stagecraft, design, scenic artistry, technical direction, stage management, and theatre management.

CTE educators understand the value of incorporating strong skills and knowledge across the curriculum to prepare students for postsecondary education or postsecondary entry into the world of work.  They are to be congratulated for their dedication to our students.
