AVID Freshman: In freshman year AVID students learn about vocabulary, tutorial, finances, team-building, and cornell notes. In addition to a strong academic focus, the freshman classes like to have fun with each other. The link below has a few pictures of the freshman classes getting to hang out with each other during school. We just finished an all-AVID mixer with the other classes. And later this month we'll be leaving for our college field trip to CSUCI and UCSB. To Titans!

What current AVID students would tell incoming freshman:

  • Hardwork - do your best and don't slack off. By working hard now you are preparing for your future.
  • Proactive - ask questions and get help when you need it. Don't be afraid to ask.
  • Honesty - be a man/woman of your word. If you say you'll get your work done, then do it.
  • Dedicated - work hard now and it will pay off later with you getting scholarships and getting into more colleges.
  • Involved - don't just come to school and take classes. Join a club or sport and take "PRIDE" in NHS. It makes being here much more fun.

Vocabulary
All AVID students will finish the year having studied over 150 SAT-tested vocabulary words. There will be over 10 units of vocab words that all students will study and take a quiz on. More information can be found by clicking on the
Vocab List Page.
Tutorial
Every freshman AVID student will learn how to ask questions, how to respond to questions, and how to study during our tutorial days. Every Tuesday and Thursday AVID students get together in small tutorial groups to get help and to help one another with their academic questions. College students working as tutors visit classrooms to assist AVID students during these tutorial days. Students focus on not just getting answers, but on developing good study habits and learning how to learn effectively. For more information on tutorials click on
Classroom Documents.
Finance
Freshman AVID students will learn about saving for college and the costs incurred by going to college. Students are encouraged to begin saving $20 per week towards their future college expenses. During 2nd semester a representative from a local bank will speak with students about setting up a college savings account. Students learn how to calculate future values of their savings as well as how to budget for expenses such as tuition, rent, and food. Students will track their expenses for one week and report on how much they spend and what they spend money on.

Team Building
AVID is a family. Students involved with AVID are building relationships that they will continue to develop for the rest of their lives. So part of AVID is getting together to work and play with one another. Team building excersizes include social events (like going to Cal Poly soccer games), watching character enhancing movies, group projects/presentations, socratic seminars, small group activities, large group events/mixers, and the teaching yourself strategy of learning.
Cornell Notes
Students in AVID will take cornell notes for all classes. Beginning your freshman year teachers will ask to see a sample of your cornell notes every month. Students should keep samples of their cornell notes in their binders for easy access.
