The top 12 overall performers in each field event, regardless of divisional classification, qualified for Masters, which will be held at the same site Friday. On the track, the top nine overall placers moved on (with the exception of the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters, which also take 12). Those to then finish in the top five of their respective events at Masters will advance to the state meet in Clovis on June 4-5.

Arroyo Grande’s Rachel Murphy tied for third in the Division 2 girls pole vault at 11-6, punching her own Masters ticket with a meet-wide sixth-place standing.

Danielle Lauinger was Arroyo Grande’s top individual placer. She was third in the Division 2 girls discus at 124-11. The Eagles’ girls 400 relay time of Nadine Reed, Emma Weinreich, Christine Moreno and Murphy finished fifth in 48.89, the third-fastest girls 400 relay time in school history.

Garrett Weinreich 51-11.00 placed 7th in the shot put and 139-4 9th in the discus.

Hugo Gurtierrez placed 6th in the 1600m with a 4:21.72.

Arroyo Grande’s boys (170 points) and San Luis Obispo’s girls (204) rolled to team titles Thursday. Arroyo Grande’s boys were unbeaten in PAC-7 League dual meets this year. Arroyo Grande’s and San Luis Obispo’s girls tied in their dual meet, so the Tigers won the girls team championship.

Nipomo’s boys were runners-up in the seven-team field with 114 points. Pioneer Valley was fifth with 43, and Righetti was seventh with 17.

Arroyo Grande’s girls were second with 145 points Thursday. Nipomo wound up third in the seven-team field with 59. Righetti was sixth with 36. Pioneer Valley did not score.

Winners in each event qualified for their respective CIF Southern Section divisional preliminaries. Second and third-place finishers had to meet pre-set divisional standards to advance. Those finishing below third place had to meet tougher pre-set divisional at-large marks in order to move on.

The victorious Eagles won seven boys events. Uriel Mendoza helped propel Arroyo Grande by winning the long jump (20-9 3/4), 400 meters (50.44) and anchoring the Eagles’ winning 1,600 relay squad (3:24:02) which broke its four-year old meet record of 3:26.75.

“We’d been talking in practice all week about the league meet,” said Mendoza. “We’ve been working hard.”

Hugo Gutierrez pulled off a distance double for the Eagles, winning the boys 1,600 (4:28.32) and 3,200 (9:43.18). Teammates Sean Brown and Garrett Weinreich won the shot put (53-7) and discus (165-11) respectively.

Two Santa Maria Valley seniors racked up sprint doubles. Dan Ando of Pioneer Valley won the boys 100 in a meet record 10.86 and took an eagerly anticipated 200 in 22.04. Megan Vyenielo of Righetti took the girls 100 in 12.35 and 200 in 25.66.

Thursday marked the first time for both of them that they had won twice in the league finals. Both of them ran career bests in each of their winning races, too.

After his 200, Ando said, “The weather,” was the biggest reason he ran as well as he did.

“I just like running in the heat, baby,” Ando said. He doesn’t get to do that very often in the Santa Maria Valley. Ando spoke after he beat two of the area’s best sprinters, Kevin Britt of Nipomo and L.T. Johnson of Arroyo Grande, to win the 200.

Britt finished second in 22.28. Johnson ran third in 22.34.

After he took the 100, Ando said, “I knew I had to be fast because everyone in this (race) was fast, know what I mean? I came upright during the race at just the right time.”

Vyenielo said, “I’m peaking at just the right time. This is a good way to go out (in the league finals).”

Gutierrez broke away on the last lap of the 1,600 after the runners came through the first lap in a leisurely 72 seconds.

“The idea was to save something for the 3,200,” Gutierrez said afterward. The strategy worked. Gutierrez went in front on the seventh of the eight laps and burned the last lap in 66 seconds.

“I wasn’t feeling good the first mile, then I started to feel better when the second mile started,” Gutierrez said.

Righetti senior Trevor Nissen has been steadily cutting his 800 time, and he went under two minutes for the first time Thursday. Nissen won in 1:59.10.

“The County meet I went down to 2:01. In the preliminaries, I went down to two minutes,” said Nissen.

“I’d been running the 400-800 double all year. That’s a tough double, but the 400 really got me muscle-ready for the 800. I’d like to give a shout out to my cross country coach, Luis Escobar. He got me into distance training, and that has really helped me.”

Arroyo Grande’s McKenzie Goldman won the girls 800 in 2:20.79. The Eagles girls 400 relay squad won in 49.45. Nipomo’s boys 400 squad prevailed in 43.04.

The end of the boys 1,600 was marred after Nipomo standout Andrew Garcia, in tight quarters, put his hand on Arroyo Grande standout Josh Davis near the finish line as the two battled for second place, and Davis went down heavily.

Davis was originally disqualified on the basis that he cut in front of Garcia. Davis was later re-instated. Garcia wound up third, Davis fourth. Garcia ran third in the 3,200 later. Davis, with a big gash just below the left shoulder, ran fifth in the 800.

Atascadero’s Markita Hinton, a Sacramento State signee, won the girls shot put at 42-11, while Arroyo Grande’s Danielle Lauinger claimed the discus throw at 129-1. San Luis Obispo’s Vivien Devaney, who earlier this week signed with Notre Dame, contributed third- and second-place finishes in those events, respectively, at 37-8 and 127-10.
