Arroyo Grande Eagles (Southern Section)
Coach: Sean Ricketts
League: Pac 7
2009 Finish: 8th at CIF-Southern Section Division 2 Finals
Returnees: Three scorers (1/3/5) among 5 of Top 7
2010 Outlook: The Eagles were solid in the big races last fall, just barely missing a big ticket to the state meet in the stacked Division 2 field at the end. Junior Hannah Stevens (18:32 at CIF Finals) and classmate Emily Johnston (19:00) lead Coach Ricketts' returning cast, which seeks to snare one of those tough berths to Fresno.

Girls 8th Place: Missed qualifying to State by 1 place (1:35:22, Prelims Time: 1:37:27)

Hugo Gutierrez  18th Place 15:38: Didn't Qualify on (Prelims Time 15:38)

Great Job!!!!! We ran well again when it counts!!! This course and our division/section is a beast. We are running with the best of the best! We had an awesome cheering squad out there!!!  I was very impressed with the body paint, flag and team spirit.  We have an awesome team and chemistry.  We have something truly special taking place on our team...Seniors, you guys went out with a bang!!!  What a awesome year for ny first 4 year crew!!!  You guys are leaving a legacy for the future generations to follow.

Hannah Stevens and Katie made the top 10 list and McKenzie moved up on the top 20 list for Mt. Sac

Girls: Wow!!! You ladies have tons of heart!!!I think this years team is one of the best girls teams AG has ever had. Look at what we ran: Hannah (18:32), Katie(18:52), Emily (19:00), McKenzie (19:03), Lupita(19:55), Amanda (20:23), Yesenia (20:35).

We ran 1 minute faster as team than we did last year at Finals when we made it to State with Karlee taking 4th in the race in 17:42. Time Comparison: 1:35:22 compared to 1:36:25.  Hannah S. improved by 45 seconds and Mckenzie by 57 seconds from last week.  Almost everyone else improved from last week or stayed consistent.  Our team time was improved by over 2 min 1:35:22 compared to 1:37:27.

This has to be one of the fastest team times and the best perfomances by an AG squad at Mt. Sac.  We beat the 9th ranked team (Sultana) and 10th ranked team (Serrano) in the state.  That shows you that we are among the elite in the state.  You ladies are tough and know how to run well when it counts!!!! We left everything on the course and you should be happy!!!!!!! We still have Western Regionals were we can have some big improvements to come!

Boys: Hugo, You da Man!!!!You followed the race plan and did exactley what you could to try to qualify onto state.  You had to get out with the top 10 and you looked relaxed doing it.  You really belong in that group of runners.  It's always great to know that you gave it all you had.  Thats a true competitior and champion!!!  Hugo and the rest of the boys, I hope your ready to run roll at Regionals!!!!!

11/21/09 Santa Maria Times Article on CIF Finals

Arroyo Grande’s and St. Joseph’s girls teams competed Saturday. So did Arroyo Grande’s Hugo Gutierrez (Division 2 boys) and Monica Illes of Santa Ynez (Division 4 girls). None advanced.

Gutierrez finished 18th in 15:38 in his race. Illes placed 20th in 19:25 in hers. Arroyo Grande’s girls wound up eighth in their division. St. Joseph’s girls finished 12th in theirs.

Even though their teams didn’t make it through, coaches Sean Ricketts of Arroyo Grande and Greg Sarkisian of St. Joseph seemed happy enough.

“Division II is a stronger girls division than Division I,” said Ricketts. “Some of the best 10 teams in the state won’t be going to state. Our girls ran well.”

Sarkisian said, “All of our girls improved their time by at least 30 seconds on the course. The trouble was, so did everybody else.”

Hannah Stevens led Arroyo Grande with a 29th-place finish in 18:32. Scoring teammates following were Katie Lewis (45th place), Emily Johnston (53rd), McKenzie Goldman (56th) and Lupita Diaz-Leon (89th). Amanda Trecartin (97th place) and Yesenia Romero (103rd) rounded out the Eagles’ scoring.

Scoring teammates following Peinado were Bridget Adam (54th place), Caitlin Brandt (72nd), Alexis Brandt (79th) and Brittany Brandt (83rd). Paulette Rigali (97th place) and Sara Scott (105th) rounded out the Knights varsity.

Arroyo Grande

“Our girls had a sick, unhealthy team,” Arroyo Grande coach Sean Ricketts said in a phone interview Saturday.

The Eagles had still advanced to the Division 2 final. Sophomore Emily Johnston led the PAC-7 League champions to a third-place finish in their heat.

“We’re anticipating a much better team race (in the finals next week), when people are healthy,” said Ricketts.

Johnston finished 10th in 18:53 Saturday. Katie Lewis (12th place), Hannah Stevens (14th), McKenzie Goldman (33rd) and Lupita Leon (39th) rounded out Arroyo Grande’s scoring.

Manhattan Beach Mira Costa won the heat with 23 points. Pomona West Ranch was second with 99. Arroyo Grande finished third with 101.

Arroyo Grande’s boys finished sixth in their heat and did not advance. Hugo Gutierrez, however, moved on as an individual. He placed fourth in 15:38. The top six individuals in each race advanced.

Cullen Cali finished 11th for the Eagles. Teammates following were Dan Smith (27th), Trevor Cowan (47th) and Jose Corona (51st).

Prep Roundup: Nipomo’s Garcia reaches cross country finals
By Tribune staff report
Nipomo High’s Andrew Garcia — fresh off his win at the PAC 7 meet — finished with the top time in his heat Saturday at the CIF-Southern Section cross country prelims at the 2.94-mile course at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

Garcia won the Division IV boys second heat in 15 minutes, 51 seconds, highlighting a number of San Luis Obispo County runners who moved on to the sectional finals.

The top five teams and top six individuals per heat all advanced to the finals, which are also at Mt. SAC, on Saturday. Those who qualify there will move on to the state meet Nov. 28 in Fresno.

In the Division III boys race, San Luis Obispo was fourth (with 149 points) in the second head. The Tigers were led by Brayden Schmidt (17th place, 16:27), Stephen Kasper (20th, 16:34) and Seamus Land (22nd, 16:36).

“It’s definitely coming together at the right time,” San Luis Obispo coach Steve Boaz said of both the Tigers’ boys and girls teams. “They’re all healthy and racing together really well.”

In Division II girls competition, Arroyo Grande overcame some illnesses to take third with 101 points in the third heat, while San Luis Obispo took second in the Division III girls second heat (100 points). The Tigers girls were led by Kathleen Uyttewaal (sixth at 18:43), Micayla Rennick (16th, 19:18) and Leah Rife-Dupuy (22nd, 19:36).

Templeton’s girls squad was third in Division IV’s second heat, with 80 points.

Among teams that didn’t move on, Arroyo Grande was sixth in Division II’s boys third heat (130 points).

Arroyo Grande’s Hugo Gutierrez, however, was fourth individually in a personal-record 15:38.

“He just blew right from eighth to fourth in the last mile,” Eagles coach Sean Ricketts said. Cullen Cali was 11th for the Eagles, in 15:54.

Cross Country: It’s Garcia’s day at PAC 7 final
Nipomo senior repeats with a win over Arroyo Grande’s Gutierrez
By Donovan Aird

As the two best boys cross country runners in the PAC 7 league, Andrew Garcia and Hugo Gutierrez have crossed paths before.

In fact, the seniors finished 1-2 at the annual San Luis Obispo County meet last week, with Arroyo Grande High’s Gutierrez coming in just one second ahead of Nipomo’s Garcia.

Garcia flipped that result Thursday afternoon at the league finals held at the Fairbanks Memorial Cross Country Course adjacent to Cuesta College, winning the 5K race in 16 minutes, 3.4 seconds. Gutierrez was second in 16:18.1.

“Hugo’s a really good friend of mine,” Garcia said. “We have a friendly rivalry going. Any time he wins, I’m happy for him, and any time I win, I’m extremely happy to beat him.”

San Luis Obispo junior Kathleen Uyttewaal won the girls race in 19:05.8.

Arroyo Grande won the boys race as a team with 37 points. On the girls side, San Luis Obispo and Arroyo Grande both had 41 points, but San Luis Obispo’s sixth-place finisher came in 14th, while Arroyo Grande’s was 19th, giving San Luis Obispo the tiebreaker.

Garcia attempted to pull away at about the mile mark, but didn’t break away from Gutierrez until the half-mile plateau.

“I tried to surge ahead and he came with me,” Garcia said of the earlier try to distance himself from Gutierrez. “Him coming with me really pushed me.”

Garcia won the league championship last year, as well, on the same course, in 16:46.

“I didn’t want to give it up,” he said of the title. “It was something that was special to me, and I wasn’t going to come in second.

“I thought about how cool it’d be to cement myself as one of the league leaders and win two titles back-to-back.”

In the girls race, Paso Robles’ Madison Cline held the lead beyond the midway point before being passed by Uyttewaal and Atascadero’s Mimi Petersen, who came in second at 19:08.4. Although Petersen caught Uyttewaal with two switchbacks remaining, Uyttewaal hung on. Cline crossed the finish line in 19:16.1.

“It’s really humbling,” Uyttewaal said of her win. “I was just doing what (Tigers) coach (Steve) Boaz said, to out-kick everyone at the end.”

As a team, Paso Robles came in second on the boys side with 66 points, followed by San Luis Obispo (81), Atascadero (108), Righetti (116), Pioneer Valley (120) and Nipomo (168).

For the girls, Atascadero and Paso Robles tied for third with 72 points, although the Greyhounds won the tiebreaker with a 26th-place sixth-place runner, as opposed to Paso Robles’ 28th-place counterpart. Righetti’s girls were a distant fifth with 148 points, followed by Pioneer Valley (188) and Nipomo (199).

Earlier this season, Atascadero was routinely ranked in the top 10 of Division III of the CIF-Southern Section, but has fallen out of the most recent polls.

“Our whole team, physically, we’re there,” Petersen said. “We just need to be focused.

“I’m happy with second (individually),” she added.

“I think I could’ve gotten first.”

Katie Lewis of Arroyo Grande was fourth in 19:30.4, and teammate Emily Johnston was one spot behind in 19:36.

Paso Robles’ Jacob Moore was third in the boys race in 16:28.4, followed in the top five by Arroyo Grande’s Cullen Cali (16:30.3) and Atascadero’s Luke Tillmann (16:44.6).

All of Arroyo Grande’s top five boys came in the top 15 overall, including sixth-place Daniel Smith (16:54.2), 11th-place Josh Davis (17:00.7) and 14th-place Trevor Cowan (17:05.8).

The Eagles boys finished atop the league’s season standings for the second year in a row with 18 points, followed by Paso Robles (14), San Luis Obispo (11), Atascadero (8), Righetti (8), Pioneer Valley (3) and Nipomo (0).

Arroyo Grande also finished first in the girls season standings, for the third year in a row, with 16 points.

San Luis Obispo came in second with 15, trailed by Atascadero (13), Paso Robles (10), Righetti (6), Pioneer Valley (3) and Nipomo (0).

Santa Maria Times Article on League Finals

Nipomo’s Garcia wins boys’ race, SLO’s Uytewaal wins girls’ at Fairbanks course

Eagles boys, girls race to team titles
By Kenny Cress

..Arroyo Grande's boys and girls cross country teams were on top of the PAC-7 League standings when the PAC-7 League Finals started Thursday. They were still there when the meet ended.

The Eagles boys won the finals at Cuesta College's hilly 5K Fairbanks course easily with 37 points to runner-up Paso Robles' 66. Arroyo Grande's girls tied San Luis Obispo for meet honors with 41 points, but were far enough ahead after the mid-season meet to edge the Tigers 16 points to 15 for first place.

Nipomo senior Andrew Garcia repeated as PAC-7 League boys champion by winning in 16:03.4. Kathleen Uytewaal of San Luis Obispo won the girls race in 19:05.8.

Arroyo Grande's girls were without sophomore Hannah Stevens. Stevens, one of the Eagles' top runners, was ill. "We expect her back for (the CIF Southern Section Preliminaries) though," said Eagles sophomore Emily Johnston.

Johnston said wistfully, "(Hannah) was itching to be out here today." Johnston finished fifth Thursday. Katie Lewis led the Eagles with a fourth-place finish.

Arroyo Grande's boys squad won easily thanks to superior balance. Hugo Gutierrez finished second in 16:18.1, Cullen Cali ran fourth and Daniel Smith came home sixth.

Arroyo Grande's girls squad three-peated as league champ. AG's boys repeated. The top four boys and girls teams in the final PAC-7 standings qualified automatically for the CIF Southern Section Preliminaries which take place Nov. 14 at Mt. San Antonio College.

Boys teams advancing automatically included, in order, Arroyo Grande, Paso Robles, SLO and Atascadero. The Greyhounds passed Righetti for fourth place Thursday.

Girls squads advancing automatlcally included, in order, Arroyo Grande, SLO, Atascadero and Paso Robles. Those were the top four teams going in.

"This is huge for us, to repeat as league champs," said Cali, who's a senior.

"We hope to build on this and go all the way to the state meet. We were without Hugo at the CIF Preliminaries last year and didn't advance past there."

Gutierrez has been Arroyo Grande's top runner each of the last two years.

Garcia pulled away over the last 800 meters Thursday. "I'm very excited to repeat as league champion," he said afterward. "Hugo's a good friend and he ran a heck of a race."

Garcia chuckled. "I knew Hugo has a good kick. I did not want to get in a footrace with him at the end." That's what happened at the mid-season meet, and Gutierrez pulled away to win. Garcia finished second.

Gutierrez said, "I'm disappointed that I couldn't win today, but our team's looking forward to the CIF prelims."

Uyttewaal passed Madison Cline of Paso Robles in the last half mile and won the girls race in 19:05.8. Atascadero's Mimi Petersen came up for second place. Cline finished third.

Lewis said, "I thought we did really well today. We usually run in a group, and we tried to stay close together today.

"It gives us confidence to know that we can do this well without one of our top runners." McKenzie Goldman (sixth place) and Lupita Leon (ninth) cracked the top 10 for Arroyo Grande.

Jacob Moore of Paso Robles finished third in the boys race. Atascadero's Luke Tillmann rounded out the top five. He finished fifth.

Steven Youngblood led Pioneer Valley's boys Thursday. He finished 13th. Manuel Perez (15th) paced Righetti.

Cynthia Vasquez of Righetti (25th place), Jasmine Ruvalcaba of Pioneer Valley (34th) and Veronica Ferreira of Nipomo (38th) were area girls team leaders.

Sean Pringle of Arroyo Grande won the boys junior varsity race in 17:43.8. Meghan Arigo of San Luis Obispo took the girls JV race in 21:35.7. Arroyo Grande's Kylie Herlihy and Brooke Ranes finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Prep Cross Country: Gutierrez, Mooney win titles at SLO County meet
Royals may have found a new star in Mooney; Arroyo Grande sweeps the team titles at Laguna Lake

By Donovan Aird | daird@thetribunenews.com

For the first time in five years, the annual San Luis Obispo County cross country meet featured a girls winner other than Jordan Hasay. But the first girl to cross the finish line was still from Mission Prep.

Annie Mooney, a junior for the Royals, won the 5K race on a cool, breezy afternoon at Laguna Lake Park on Thursday afternoon in 18 minutes, 59 seconds.

“It’s fun to run where Jordan ran,” Mooney said of etching her name into the all-time winners list. “It hasn’t really hit me.”

Arroyo Grande’s Hugo Gutierrez won the boys race in 16:19, as the Eagles claimed both team titles, with 45 points on the boys side and 47 on the girls side.

Early on in the girls race, Mooney and Templeton’s Kaley Hook broke away from a cluster before Hook dropped out midway through the course with a foot injury. Toward the end, Mooney stayed strong in the face of considerable wind on the back stretch.

“It’s easy to have that take the energy out of you,” Mooney said of the wind on the relatively flat course. “I was kind of trying to draft behind someone, but no one really wanted to take the lead, so I had to stay strong on that back part to take the lead.”

As a freshman and sophomoreMooney went on to finish second at the CIF Division V state cross country championships, both times trailing only Hasay — the former Royals great who set nine national high school records from 2005 through 2009 and is now running at the University of Oregon.

This season, Mooney already has had wins at the Morro Bay Invitational on Sept. 12, the Division V race at the Stanford Invitational on Sept. 26 and the small-school competition at the Brug Invitational on Oct. 3.

“I’m just trying to use each (race) as a learning experience to see what I can do,” she said Thursday.

At about the halfway point in the boys race, Gutierrez was in an even pack with two others for the lead.

“I wanted to go out controlled and not too fast,” said Gutierrez, a senior who was unable to run the race as a junior because of an injury. “It was a little windy, but other than that, it was good. By the second mile, I was getting a little tired, but I knew I had to pick it up and I started leading the race for the last mile.”

Nipomo’s Andrew Garcia placed second on the boys side in 16:20, followed in the top five by Arroyo Grande’s Cullen Cali (16:26) and Paso Robles’ Pepe Gonzalez (16:33) and Jacob Moore (16:39).

Templeton’s Savannah Camacho, who last year was one of just two freshmen to compete in the girls 1,600 at the state track and field championships in Clovis, finished second in the girls race in 19:07.

“It went way better than I expected,” Camacho said. “I couldn’t be more happy.'
Arroyo Grande’s girls won the team title courtesy of placing four runners in the top nine — No. 4 Katie Lewis (19:11), No. 6 Emily Johnston (19:22), No. 7 McKenzie Goldman (19:32) and No. 9 Lupita Diaz-Leon (19:59).

San Luis Obispo, led by fifth-place Kathleen Uyttewaal (19:16), finished second as a team with 61 points. Paso Robles, paced by third-place Maddy Cline (19:08), was third with 84.

Templeton’s girls, ranked No. 8 in Division IV — a slot behind seventh-ranked Morro Bay — finished fourth as a team with 115. Rounding out the bottom half of the girls team scores were Mission Prep (123), Atascadero (141), Morro Bay (204) and Nipomo (326).

Paso Robles was second in the boys race with 71 points, ahead of San Luis Obispo (80), Atascadero (96), Morro Bay (166), Templeton (211), Mission Prep (218) and Nipomo (232).

Prep Roundup: Arroyo Grande teams sweep PAC 7 cross country meet

The Arroyo Grande High cross country team won both the boys and girls races at the PAC 7 midseason meet in Nipomo on Thursday.

The Eagles won the girls race with 25 points, an outcome Arroyo Grande coach Sean Ricketts said he expected.

“The girls have been so dominant,” Ricketts said. “Our goal was to have a 30-second gap within our team and it ended up being 28. We had a good pack today.”

Atascadero’s Mimi Peterson won the 5K race in 19 minutes, eight seconds, but Arroyo Grande’s runners took third through seventh place, led by Hannah Stevens’ time of 19:31. Atascadero finished second with 60 points, and Paso Robles was a close third with 62.

On the boys side, Arroyo Grande’s Hugo Gutierrez crossed the finish line one second ahead of Nipomo’s Andrew Garcia in 16:09.

“Hugo went out and did what he needed to and showed that he wants to win league,” Ricketts said.

Gutierrez was joined by teammates Cullen Cali (in third at 16:20) and Dan Smith (sixth, 16:42) in the top 10. They were joined by Trevor Cowan, who finished 11th in 16:58.

The Eagles’ 50 points were better than Paso Robles by 18. Righetti was third with 90 points, and San Luis Obispo finished fourth with 94. Atascadero’s top finisher, Luke Tillman, was fifth in 16:37.

Clovis Invite 10/10/09 at Woodpark Park in Fresno 5K

Great Job AGHS!!!!!! (Click on the Picture for Full Meet Results)
It was a great trip to beautiful Fresno!!!!!!
We got to run on the State Meet Course and got the opportunity to run fast and compete against some of the best in the state.

The girls varsity took home 1st Place in the Div. 2 race. Our 1-5 pack was spread out by over a minute, but we still managed to dominate and win the race. Coming through the 1st mile we had 4 girls in the top 10.
We have to work on keeping our time gap tight (30 seconds).
Up front Hannah Stevens and Emily Johnston lead the way. Hannah S. was in contention to win it in the last mile, Wow!!!!
Way to race girls!!!

The boys varsity looked good up front with Hugo and Cullen attacking the front of the race. Hugo was in contention to win it, but the leaders made a stiff move in the last half mile for the win. Our 10th place finish was solid, but our time gap was to large (2:24). We have to bring the time gap under 1 min if we are going to be competitive for the league championship and in CIF in order to make it to State.
Me and Coach Reid have faith that you guys can do it.

What a great experience for the JV squads. the JV girls took 3rd place in their race. What a showing. Brenda and Blake respectively lead the JV squads.
Great Job Everyone!!!!
You only get faster from here on and out!!!!!

One thing that I noticed, Was that everyone can work on the 2nd half of their race, especially the last mile "Finish Strong". I am training you guys to be able to do this, especially this 2nd half of the season.

Check out the splits in the attachment below!!!! Varsity, I calculated your mile splits (Pay close attention to them) Lat split is 1800 meters, not 1600 meters.

Improvements at Clovis:
Cullen Cali: 16:27, 16:38 (11th grade)
Hannah Stevens: 19:25, 19:38 (9th grade)

Prep Roundup: Stevens leads Arroyo Grande Eagles to cross country win
By Tribune staff report

Hannah Stevens led the Arroyo Grande High girls cross country team to a victory at the Clovis Invitational on Saturday in Clovis.

Stevens, who finished third in the girls Division II race in a time of 19 minutes, 25 seconds, was the top finisher for the Eagles, who won the team title with 55 points.

“We’ve finished second at this event for the last two years,” Arroyo Grande coach Sean Ricketts said. “It was great to have them step up and get the win this year.”

San Ramon Valley finished a distant second with 108 points while Livermore’s Natalie Dimits won the 5K individual race in a time of 19:14.

Emily Johnston (seventh, 19:44) and Katie Lewis (ninth, 20:04) also finished in the top 10 for Arroyo Grande.

“(The girls) still got in there placement wise,” Ricketts said. “Four in the top 10 through the first mile shows that we were a dominant force in this race.”

On the boys side, Hugo Gutierrez finished third in a time of 16:11 to help Arroyo Grande to a 10th-place finish with 273 points. Steven Melena of Eastside won the race in 15:53 while De La Salle won the team title with 93 points.

Arroyo Grande’s Cullen Cali finished 14th in 16:27.

9/26/09 Stanford Invite @ Stanford Golf Course 5k

Great Job Everyone!!!!!
What a great experience. We had a great time at the wharf (tore apart the restuarant for a lost cell phone), and a great time at an awesome place (Stanford). The course was awesome.
Girls got to see were they stack up against quality teams and the guys had a rough day, but we need to shake it off and get ready for Clovis and the championship part of the season.
We got to compete against the states best.
JV got to mix up with varsity squads and our varsity teams got to mix it up with the best teams in the state. You guys both got great experience.
Coach Reid and I are very proud of you guys for running through the hot conditions!
Remember, everybody has to do it too. This is what it might be like at Clovis Invite, CIF or even State. Here's a temperature recap:
D3 Boys (81 degrees):
D3 Girls (88 degrees):
D2 Boys (93 degrees):
D2 Girls (97 degrees):
D1 Boys (101 degrees):
Division I Girls (104 degrees):
Seeded Boys (103 degrees):
Seeded Girls (101 degrees):

Here's how are varisty teams faired:
Girls Seeded: 12th out of 24 teams and overall we finished 22nd out of 134 teams
(We beat the 5th ranked team in the state in Div. 1 Oak Ridge and we were 14 points behind the 9th ranked team in the state in Div. 1 Rancho Buena Vista- Remember we are Div. 2)
Not bad for a mediocore day for our girls team.
Boys Seeded: 24th out of 26 teams and 68th overall out of 168 teams
(We got beat by Paso Robles, we need to focus more on the race and less on little things like shaving our legs)

Great Job AGHS! WE continued to set the tone of looking like a team and representing AG with pride. We looked like a bunch of killer bees out there with our awesome team shirts!
Varsity Girls you followed the plan to a tee and looked too easy cruising in and swallowing up people through out the race, especially the end.
Varsity boys you have to work as a team and be patient! When it's time to race you will roll out!

Coach Reid and I were very proud of the whole team yesterday! continue our team/pack mentality!

Santa Maria Article on The Lompoc 5 Way Meet

Birds of a feather...

AG's pack mentality gives both boys and girls the win at Lompoc XC Meet

They wanted to stay together. They did.

None of Arroyo Grande's runners won their respective boys or girls races at the Lompoc Meet Thursday. The Eagles' scoring five runners in each race DID stay at the front of the pack for the entire three miles of the River Park Course.

The payoff for each Arroyo Grande team was an impressive win over traditionally powerful San Marcos teams. The Eagles girls finished 3-through-7 and beat the second-place Royals 25-61. St. Joseph finished third with 73 points. Pioneer Valley was fourth with 199 and Lompoc was fifth in the five-way meet with a score of 127.

The Arroyo Grande boys team beat San Marcos 39-51. Pioneer Valley finished third with 64 points. St. Joseph was fourth with 108 and Lompoc was fifth with 110 points.

Junior Quetta Peinado of St. Joseph won the girls race going away with a time of 18:45. Freshman teammate Bridget Adam ran second in 19:33. Evan Bradford of San Marcos took the boys race in a quick 16:28. Sophomore Hayes Dunn of St. Joseph was second in 16:43.

Freshman Lupita Leon led the Eagles girls with a third-place finish in 19:47. Hugo Gutierrez paced the Eagles boys, finishing third with a time of 16:46.

Two seconds separated the top Eagles runners. Leon, Hannah Stevens, Emily Johnston, McKenzie Goldman and Katie Lewis, in that order, who all finished together in a tight grouping.

"We were never worried that one of (our scoring runners) would drop off," during the race, Leon said afterward. "We were pretty solid all the way through.

"We're pretty excited," to beat a traditional powerhouse such as San Marcos, said Leon. The Eagles made it look easy, to boot.

Leon said she ran cross country at Paulding Middle School in Arroyo Grande but, "There's a big difference," between that and running for a high school.

Leon ran her second high school cross country race Wednesday. She was the Eagles' third runner, behind Stevens and Johnson, in her prep debut.

As some of the Eagles were heading toward the finish line, Arroyo Grande coach Sean Ricketts yelled at them not to sprint.

"We're running at Stanford next weekend, and that will be when we really find out how well we can run (full-out) as a team," said Gutierrez.

"Of course, it's a big confidence booster to score a relatively easy win over a team like San Marcos," said Gutierrez after her run.

"We got everything out of this meet that we wanted to."

Peinado and Adam had their second consecutive impressive 1-2 finish.

"This went a lot better than when I raced here last year. I was hurt then," Peinado said.

"I'm feeling a lot stronger than I was at this time last year. The work I did during the summer has paid off."

Adam said that she did a bit of running for the San Luis Obispo Distance Club before high school but, "When I was in eighth grade, I didn't even think I'd make the varsity," her freshman year. She has, and she's made a big impact for the Knights already in just her first year.

Dunn is a relative running novice. The Knights' number two tennis singles player in 2008 took up distance running in track last year, "Mainly to stay in shape for cross country."

Scoring Arroyo Grande runners behind Gutierrez were Cullen Cali (fourth), Dan Smith (eighth) and Trevor Cowan who came in eleventh place for the Eagles.

Pioneer Valley runners Juan Sanchez (5th place) and Steven Youngblood (10th) both cracked the boys top 10. Eduardo Morales was Lompoc's top runner with a seventh place finish.

Ashley Fabing led the Lompoc girls with a 10th-place finish. Jasmine Ruvalcaba (35th) was the Panthers' top finisher.

"I like cross country a lot better (than track). I like the varied courses."

Olivia Guadiana (Ventura-SS) - Careful, well-timed peak for the latest Ventura HS star had a super run at the State Meet after qualifying as an individual with a “lucky 13th” placing and 18:10 clocking at Woodward Division I.

Karlee Owens (Arroyo Grande-SS) - A pleasant surprise and much-improved this Fall, Owens was fourth Southern Secton Division II and sixteenth at State at that competitive level.

Anne Randall (Saugus-SS) - Part of the nation’s #2 ranked squad, Randall had a couple of super races in the Fall for the top team in California prep history and joined them for their championship exploits.

Mary Reynolds (Mountain View-CCS) - CCS Runner-up Division II Mary helped lead one of the state’s top teams with her top twenty State Finals finish in Fresno

Sarah Tusting (Benicia-SJ) - Super improved since last year, Sarah was runner-up in the Sac Joaquin Section Division II Finals, then placed top fifteen at that level in the State Meeet in Fresno.

12/6/08 Footlocker Western Regionals at Mt. Sac Course: 5K

States that Competed: CA, WA, UT, ID, AZ, NM, NV, AK, HI, OR, WY, and Overseas Military. Check Out The Athletes Splits Below:

It was a Great Day to Run. Karlee ended her High School XC career with a great performance at Western Regionals. She finished 16th place (6 places away from qualifying to Nationals) in (19:16) a very tactical race that was blasted right open by Jordan Hasay the second half. Great Race for still being sick and on antibiotics. What a gutsy effort. She earned 2nd team All-Western Region honors and was flown out to the University of Arizona for a recruiting trip afterward.

Hannah Stevens finished really well in The Frosh/Soph All Western Regional Race. She finished 15th place in her P.R. pace from CIF Finals (20:30) while being sick and not running for a week. She is showing her true talent.

McKenzie (33rd place) 21:36 and Katie (35th Place) 21:37 cruised in the Open Junior Girls race going out slow and then finishing hard. They had a great time, ran fast and thats what it is all about!

Cullen Cali ran really well in the Open Boys Junior race continuig a break through season with a 20th place finish in 17:24 (he came through 2.95 miles in 16:32) and finished hard. Jose 18:21 and Juan 19:10 ran well despite being sick and not 100%.

Stud Freshman Josh Davis got out well and ran great the first half of the Frosh/Soph All Western Regional Race, but was dehyadrated and faded to 18:52 in the last half of the race. Poor guy, we have to stay hydrated!

Santa Maria Times Article on Western Regionals:

Hasay four-peats at Foot Locker West
By Kenny Cress / Sports Writer, kcress@santamariatimes.com
WALNUT — Jordan Hasay’s plan for her Foot Locker West Regional race Saturday was to go on a glorified tempo run and still win.

The plan worked.

Hasay was part of a lead pack of runners at the two-mile mark. Then she made a move and, “No one challenged me,” the Mission Prep senior said in a phone interview Saturday after she made history.

Hasay, 17, is the only girl ever to four-peat at the West Regional in the Foot Locker series’ 30-year history. Chris Schwartz of Bakersfield won the boys race in 15:43.

“Like state, this is really special,” she said. The Saturday before, she became the only girl other than Sara Hall to win four California state cross country championships when she took the Division V race.

The Arroyo Grande resident won in 18:02 Saturday over the 5,000-meter course at Mt. San Antonio College. San Clemente senior Alex Dunne was the runner-up in 18:12.

The top 10 runners qualified for the Dec. 13 Foot Locker Nationals at Mission Bay in San Diego, the race Hasay said she has been pointing toward all season. Hasay is 6-0 this year.

The 18:02 was a slow time for Hasay over the course. No matter, she said.

“That was the perfect race for me. (All of the qualifiers) just wanted to have a lot left for next weekend. It was really just a tempo run for me.”

Hasay chuckled. “You don’t want to trip or something,” during the regional. “I just wanted to qualify.”

Arroyo Grande senior Karlee Owens also had a big day. In her first seeded girls Foot Locker West Regional race, the same race Hasay won, Owens earned Second Team All-Western Region honors by finishing 16th in 19:16.

“This was a good experience for her,” Arroyo Grande coach Sean Ricketts said by phone afterward.

“Karlee has been sick since Thanksgiving, unfortunately. She’s been sick, but she’s run through it. She didn’t have an especially good day at the state meet (16th in Division IV), but she really came through today.

“Afterward, she got to fly to the University of Arizona for a recruiting trip.”

Arroyo Grande freshman Hannah Stevens finished a solid 14th in 20:25 in the Frosh-Soph Girls All-West Region race. A.G.’s Cullen Calli was 20th in 17:25 in the Open Junior Boys race.

As for Hasay, she said her strength was where she wanted it to be after her easy win Saturday.

“I had really good workouts this week,” said the Mission Prep senior. “I went pretty hard in the workouts this week.

“Next week I’ll probably just taper off and get ready for (next) Saturday,” when she’ll try to re-claim the national Foot Locker title she won as a freshman in 2005.

Defending Foot Locker national champ Ashley Brasovan of West Palm Beach, Fla. will join Hasay at the starting line next Saturday. So will South Region champion Kathy Kroeger of Franklin, Tenn. Kroeger won the national Foot Locker race in 2007.

Hasay has had a string of four-peats this year, including the San Luis Obispo County, CIF Central Section, CIF State and Foot Locker West Region meets.

Ricketts’ son Christian ran the two-mile course in 12:34 Saturday to win the fourth grade division of the boys elementary-middle school race. He was 38th overall.

The Girls Finished 13th in The State in Div. 2! Please click on the picture above to view a video of the race.
Great Job ladies, you are the 13th Best Team in Div. 2 in the State!
We did really well even though we had people suffereing from sickness and cramps. Senior Karlee Owens led the team with a 16th place finish in 18:21. She was in the top 10 in the first two miles of the race and then her cold/sore throat caught up with her in the last mile. Way to tough it out Karlee. Hannah Stevens was are second scorer with a strong finish and awesome freshman time of 19:27. Right behind her was Junior Katie Lewis who ran a P.R. of 19:40. That is awesome for a girl who was sick for half the season with Pneumonia and a full blown asthma attack. Sophmore Haley MacDonald was our next scorer with a solid performance and finish in 20:09. Rounding out are finishers were sisters McKenzie and Hannah Goldman. McKenzie tried to fight off a horrible cramp and finished in 20:48 and Freshman Hannah ran a great race to finish in 23:02.
Ladies you had a great season! Be proud of all of your accomplishments!

Hasay wins title No. 4, AG girls take 13th
By Kenny Cress / Sports Writer, kcress@santamariatimes.com

FRESNO — Jordan Hasay earned that fourth state cross country championship she was expected to win, and she drained the suspense out of the race early.

She was 5 meters ahead by the 50-meter mark. Hasay won the Girls Division V race at the CIF State Cross Country Championships over the 5,000 meter Woodward Park course in 17:18 Saturday.

Hasay’s victory margin was 1:19. Sophomore teammate Annie Mooney finished second in 18:37.

Hasay hit the mile-mark in 5:16 and then, “I felt a little tired during the last two miles,” she said.

Hasay was hoping to break the course record of 16:43. She settled for being the only girl other than Sarah Hall to win four California state cross country championships.

Meanwhile Arroyo Grande’s girls finished 13th in the 23-team Girls Division II field. Karlee Owens led the Eagles by finishing 16th, in 18:21.

Freshman Hannah Stevens, Arroyo Grande’s second runner home in 19:27 (53rd place for scoring purposes) said she was excited simply to be in the state meet.

“I’m really happy with the way I ran,” too, she said. “I’m excited and looking forward to more times coming back here.”

Nipomo junior Andrew Garcia qualified for the meet as an individual. He finished 23rd, in 16:26, in the Boys Division IV race. Ty Johnson of Palma won in 15:32.

Hasay ran the fastest time of the day. Division I winner Alex Dunne of San Clemente ran the second-fastest, 17:27.

The four-peat was the second for Hasay this season. She pulled the feat off earlier at the Central Section Finals earlier this month. Mission Prep won its 11th sectional championship. The Royals were sixth Saturday with 190 points. Palos Verdes Peninsula Chadwick won with 72.

“I was a little disappointed with my time,” Hasay said afterward. However, thanks to the four-peat, “This is a good day.”

It was also a good day as far as Arroyo Grande girls coach Sean Ricketts was concerned.

“I hope we finished in the top 15,” he said after his team’s work was done Saturday.

“But any finish here is good. This is the first time we’ve been to the state meet as a team in 17 years.”

Arroyo Grande got the top-15 finish Ricketts was hoping for. The Eagles scored 342 points. Sophomore race winner Kaylin Mahoney (17:34) led Saugus to the team title.

Scoring Eagles included Owens (11th for scoring purposes), freshman Hannah Stevens (53rd), junior Katie Lewis (69th), sophomore Haley MacDonald (93rd) and junior McKenzie Goldman (116th).

Freshman Hannah Goldman (153rd) rounded out Arroyo Grande’s squad Saturday.

Saugus had a dominating performance. The Centurians scored 32 points to runner-up Manhattan Mira Costa’s 141.

Owens was 10th at the 2-mile mark. “I tried to hang on,” for that medal, she said. “But, oh, well.”

The senior said, “This was my personal best for this course, but I was hoping to run better. Now I’ll just try to have a good race at the Foot Locker West Regional.”

Owens will be in the seeded race there next week at Mt. San Antonio College. Hasay will try for her fourth West Regional title in that race.

Garcia, like most of the runners interviewed, gave the Woodward Park course a lukewarm review.

The course features rolling hills and, “I missed my steep hills today,” Garcia said. The legendary Mt. SAC course has those steep hills Garcia loves. He said that’s his favorite course.

“I was hoping for a little better finish today,” said Garcia. “But I have another year. Another year to get stronger. Another year to get better.”

The Mt. SAC course is Hasay’s favorite, too. She said she was “a little sad,” that Saturday marked her last state meet but she didn’t exactly wax nostalgic about being done with the Woodward Park course. She’s run it 11 times and won every time.

James Shipe led the Morro Bay boys to third place in Division IV. The Pirates scored 148 points, behind winner Big Bear’s 44. Shipe finished seventh in 15:55. Individual stale meet qualifier Paul Denlinger of Templeton was a spot behind Garcia, with an identical 16:26. Morro Bay’s girls finished eighth in Division IV. Sophomore Loren Fisher led them, finishing 14th in 19:12.

Atascadero’s Mimi Peterson was 40th in 19:15 in the Girls Division III race. She qualified for the state championships as an individual.

Hasay hunts for CIF title No. 4
By Kenny Cress / Sports Writer, kcress@santamariatimes.com

Jordan Hasay said by phone Wednesday night that it won’t be until the Foot Locker National Championship race that it will hit her that her high school cross country career is closing.

Still, “Yeah, it’s a little bit sad,” that her state championship cross country racing is almost done, the Arroyo Grande resident and Mission Prep senior said.

Hasay will run in her fourth, and last, Division V state race at 1:20 p.m. Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno. She’s a prohibitive favorite to win the girls Division V race at the CIF State Cross Country Championships for the fourth time.

Senior Karlee Owens leads Arroyo Grande’s girls into the first state meet for an Arroyo Grande girls cross country squad since 1991. Pioneer Valley boys basketball coach Greg DeNike was the Eagles’ coach then. The Eagles will run in the Girls Division II race at 10:05 a.m. Saturday.

Nipomo junior Andrew Garcia qualified for the Division IV boys state meet as an individual. He’ll run at 12:45 p.m. All state meet races will be at Woodward Park.

Boys and girls races will be 5 kilometers. The Eagles’ girls squad at the state meet figures to include Owens, Hannah Stevens (freshman), McKenzie Goldman (junior), Katie Lewis (junior), Haley MacDonald (sophomore), Hannah Goldman (freshman) and Amanda Trescartin (sophomore).

Arroyo Grande’s squad took the seventh, and final, qualifying spot in its section finals race. The Eagles did beat eighth-place Canyon Country Canyon by 20 points.

Hasay is the prep girls national 1,500-meters record holder (4:14.50) She said she’ll go after the course record of 16:43 Saturday.

“This will be just my fourth race this year, because I’m really focusing on the Foot Locker Nationals,” where she’ll try to re-claim the national title she won as a freshman in 2005, said Hasay. Hasay was third at the 2007 Foot Locker Nationals.

She said, “I’m going to go hard and hopefully get the course record,” Saturday. Hasay ran 17:01 as a freshman there and 17:05 as a junior.

“I’m a little sad that it’s my last state meet, but I’m happy that I won’t be running that course anymore,” Hasay said with a laugh. “I like Woodward Park. It’s just that I’ve run it so many times.”

Ten times, in fact. Hasay’s run four section finals races, three state meet races and three Clovis Invitational races there.

Hasay led Mission Prep to its 11th consecutive Central Section Division V girls cross country title earlier this month. The Royals have been in the top five in the CIF State division V each of Hasay’s first three years at Mission Prep.

“We’re ranked fourth this year,” she said. “Hopefully we can get that or higher.”

Owens is an 800 and 1,500-meter specialist in track. She considers track her best sport. She’s been plenty impressive in cross country this year, however.

She took her first three races this season. Owens won the PAC-7 League finals race going away and then ran what coach Sean Ricketts described as “the perfect race for her,” in the Toyota CIF Southern Section Division II Finals last Saturday. Owens finished fourth over the 3-mile course at Mt. San Antonio College.

She ran a 17:42, her personal best on the course by 20 seconds.

Garcia has had an impressive season, too. He won the boys race at the PAC-7 League finals. Garcia finished a solid ninth at the section finals, in 16:12. That was his best at the Mt. SAC course by 10 seconds.

Hasay said, “I think the state meet and (Foot Locker) regionals will help me prepare for the nationals. I want to do well at the state meet, but if I don’t do as well as I’d like, that’s OK because I just want to do well at nationals.”

Hasay is the three-time defending Foot Locker West Regionals champion. The West Regionals is a qualifier for the national finals.

Hasay was rated second in a recent Dyestat.com national poll to defending Foot Locker National champion Ashley Brasovan. Brasovan is a senior from Florida.

“They’re still giving Ashley the number one ranking, but that’s OK,” said Hasay. “She definitely deserves it. Ashley set the (prep) national 5,000 meters record at the Nike Outdoor Nationals (last summer). That’s pretty amazing.”

Hasay said she doesn’t know yet whether she will try to defend the Junior Cross Country Nationals championship she won in 2006 and 2007. That race will be in Baltimore this winter.

WOW! Did things really come together for the girls Team! WE DID IT! We finished 7th place and qualified for state as a team for the 1st time in 17 YEARS (1991)! What an accomplishment. Great Job Ladies! The girls team followed the race plan to a Tee! All of our girls got out quickly into the 1st half of the race and fought through the hills to maintian their positions and then finished hard. Our team time was about 3 minutes faster from last week at CIF Prelims. We went from 1:39:10 to 1:36:28. Karlee Owens put her perfect race together that we have been working on in bits and pieces through out the whole season and set a blazing fast school record of 17:42 taking 4th place and running the 6th fastest time of the day across all of the divisions. The rest of the girls team pretty much ran 30-60 seconds faster than last week. WE ALL ROLLED OUT!
Hannah Stevens ran over 1 minute faster blazing a quick freshman time of 19:20, followed closely by McKenzie Goldman in 19:30 who ran over 40 seconds faster. Our 4th and 5th girls who sealed the deal were Katie Lewis 19:54 (25 seconds faster) and Haley MacDonald 20:02 (28 seconds fatser. What a day! Enjoy this ladies! This is the part of the season were we let all of the training we did in the past couple months take us along for a ride and run fast times!

Great Article On The Girls Team's performance at CIF Finals From the Santa Maria Times!

AG girls, Nipomo’s Garcia run to State
By Kenny Cress / Sports Writer, kcress@santamariatimes.com
WALNUT — Local runners ran the three-mile Mt. SAC cross country course Saturday faster than they had the week before. Much faster.
Their reward is the first trip for each of them to the state meet.
Senior Karlee Owens finished fourth in 17:42 in the girls Division II race at the CIF Southern Section Toyota Championships at Mt. San Antonio College. She led Arroyo Grande’s girls to the CIF State Championships. Nipomo junior Andrew Garcia placed ninth in 16:12 in the Division IV boys race. He qualified for the state meet as an individual.

Owens ran her best time ever on the course with the steep and storied Switchbacks, Poop Out Hill and Reservoir Hill. She was 20 seconds faster than she was last week at the section preliminaries. In fact, “That had been my best time here,” Owens said.

It took Owens awhile to recover from her big race. “Oh my gosh, I’m so tired,” she said afterward. “But I’m so happy. Finally, I qualified for state. I just hope the team did.”

The team did, taking the seventh place it needed to. The top seven teams, plus five individuals from non-qualifying teams (as long as they placed in the top 20) in each division advanced to the state meet. Garcia was the fourth individual qualifier in his division.

Sophomore Kaylin Mahoney ran the fastest girls time of the day, 17:01. She led Saugus to a dominating win in Division II. Saugus went 1-3-6-7-8 in original placing. Most runners’ original placings were revised slightly for scoring purposes.

The state meet is next Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno. Arroyo Grande coach Sean Ricketts said the Eagles are going partly because, “My number two (Hannah Stevens) ran a minute faster here than she ran last week and my number three (junior McKenzie Goldman) ran 40 seconds faster.

“My number four (junior Katie Lewis), and my number five (sophomore Haley MacDonald) ran 25-30 seconds faster.

Garcia ran 10 seconds faster than he did last week. Still, he didn’t know he’d be going to the state meet until after his division’s awards ceremony.

“I’m going to state!,” Garcia exclaimed as some well wishers hugged him and greeted him with the news.

Garcia said, “My season hinged on this race. My whole goal had been the state meet.”

As for the Arroyo Grande girls, “This is the first time an Arroyo Grande girls team has gone to the state meet since 1991, when Greg DeNike was the coach,” Ricketts said. “This is a big deal.”

Stevens finished 43rd Saturday. McKenzie Goldman ran 48th. Lewis was 66th, and MacDonald finished 72nd as she rounded out Arroyo Grande’s scoring. Freshman Hannah Goldman (114th) and sophomore Amanda Trecartin (115th) rounded out Arroyo Grande’s squad. Places listed are original places.

Garcia and the Arroyo Grande girls put themselves in good position early. Garcia was in sixth place at the halfway point, which was just after the switchbacks. Owens was in fourth, and Stevens and McKenzie Goldman were in the top half of the field. They ended up there.

“We went out the first mile a lot harder as a team than we did last week, and that really helped us,” said McKenzie Goldman. “We reached our goal as a team.”

Stevens said, “The weather — it was cooler this time — and my team helped me run a lot better this time. We wanted to get to state so bad. Our team was really pumped.”

Owens and Garcia weren’t overly pumped early. They simply stayed toward the front and stayed out of trouble.

“I knew I had to be toward the lead early,” said Owens. “You can’t let yourself be stuck in the middle in this race or you’ll never move up.”

“We put the plan together for Karlee to run the perfect race, and she finally ran the perfect race,” said Ricketts.

Garcia said, “I didn’t change my routine. I ran Poop Out hill (the second hill) harder this time, so that helped.”

Arroyo Grande’s girls and Garcia made it to the state meet with room to spare. Arroyo Grande scored 220 points to eighth-place Canyon Country’s 240. Owens was third for scoring purposes. Canyon’s top runner was 23rd.

Great Job to both Boys and Girls teams! The weather was close to 100 degrees by the time the girls ran with poor air quality and we all still managed to run really well.

Girls: We went down and took care of business in order to move on to CIF Finals pretty easily, despite having somewhat of a off day due to the weather. We finished 4th in our heat (top 5 advanced in each heat). Karlee looked really great up front running nice and relaxed not pushing the pace at all and went on to win her heat by 26 seconds in a p.r. time of 18:01. The rest of the girls team did a great job packing it up and running strong on the hills. Our #2 through #6 girls finished with in 20 seconds of each other. Next week we really have to get after it and run a really strong second half of the race. We have a really good shot at making it to state ladies (This hasn't been done in over 15 years)! Great Job!

Boys: What a way to end the season. All of the boys ran really well and pr'd. Hugo was very smart and sat this one out due to a muscle strain in his leg that he has been battling for over 1 month now. He is teaching the team about patience and doing the right thing. We took 10 place in our heat, but we all need to be proud of how strong we ran. Cullen lead the boys with a 22nd place finish running 16:15 which cracks into our schools All time Mt. Sac top 10 list. He lead Dan , Josh, Jose, Juan and Niko to pr's across the board. I was really proud of you guys and just think of how awesome of a team we are going to have next year!

What a great Article on League Finals From The Santa Maria Times!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Soaring to a Win
By Dan Watson / Assistant Sports Editor, dwatson@santamariatimes.com

Arroyo Grande's Karlee Owens heads to the finish line to win the PAC-7 League girls' individual championship at the league finals, held on Thursday at the Cuesta/Fairbanks Course in San Luis Obispo.

SAN LUIS OBISPO - When it really mattered, Arroyo Grande cross country - a talented team years in the making - came through in the biggest way.

“They reached into their heart and left it all out there,” Eagles coach Sean Rickets said.

Arroyo Grande shook off the injuries, and the doubts on Thursday, as both the boys and girls squads raced to PAC-7 League titles at the always-daunting Fairbanks Course in San Luis Obispo.

The Arroyo Grande girls took the league title with the PAC-7 League Finals win, while the boys turned a fifth-place standing into their own title with the finals win. And Arroyo Grande's Karlee Owens has her individual league title.

“It doesn't get any sweeter than this,” said Rickets.

This was the Arroyo Grande the others feared in the preseason. However, “We've been off and on this season,” Rickets said. “When it was time to perform, we haven't been ready. Today, we put everything together.”

As expected, the girls team was paced by Owens, who was never truly pushed. Owens jumped ahead early and ran going away with a time of 18:55. In all, the Arroyo Grande girls snagged six of the top nine spots, snatching the league title away from rival Atascadero.

The Greyhounds are traditional cross country rivals with the Eagles, and finished second in both divisions.

While the AG girls team - one “predicted to win” and at times ranked among the Southern Section's elite - raced to a win, the boys team did so in much more surprising fashion.

“It's one of those things, we've been struggling the whole season and haven't been able to prove ourselves,” Rickets said. “We were fifth at the mid-season meet, and out of the loop. Our No. 1 guy was hurt, and we've been trying to get him back. The morale of the team was down.”

That No. 1 guy, Hugo Gutierrez, shook off a stubborn injury and raced to fifth place (17:05). Just ahead was teammate Cullen Cali in fourth (17:00). Rounding out the Eagles' finishers were Dan Smith (14th), Jose Corona (19th), Joshua Davis (22nd), Nicholas Ostby (27th) and Juan Alvarez (36th).

“Finally, we're No. 1 as a team, we are No. 1 and it's been a couple years coming,” Rickets said. “We've been building it and building it, and finally it's coming into place.”

The top four finishers in league advance to the CIF Southern Section Preliminaries to be held at Mt. SAC on Saturday, Nov. 15. For the boys, the final standings were Arroyo Grande (14), Atascadero (14), San Luis Obispo (13), Righetti (10), Pioneer Valley (9), Paso Robles (3) and Nipomo (0). With the finals win, AG got the tiebreaker against Atascadero.

Owens - Arroyo Grande's lone girls senior - took home a title, and is still shooting for the CIF State Playoffs. Owens has received some recent collegiate attention, including talks with Arizona State cross country coach, and former Eagles great, Louie Quintana.

“I think I'm going to visit after the cross country season,” Owens said. She has talked to UC Davis, and received e-mails from Stanford and UCLA.

The league title was a long time coming for Owens.

“She's never had a chance to win league, there has always been someone there. A Paso girl's won for a few years, and then last year we had a freshman who came out and won, she's not with us this year,” Rickets said. “She's kind of been in the shadow. In track, she's had titles for the mile. She's putting it all together her senior year.”

Behind Owens were teammates McKenzie Goldman (fourth, 20:36), Hannah Stevens (fifth, 20:48), Emily Johnston (sixth), Katie Lewis (seventh), Haley MacDonald (ninth) and Sarah Johnston (32nd).

The final girls standings were: Arroyo Grande (23), Atascadero (39), San Luis Obispo (87), Righetti (113), Paso Robles (113), Pioneer Valley (179) and Nipomo (n/s).

WHAT A GREAT DAY FOR ARROYO GRANDE CROSS COUNTRY!!!!!!
Good Job Everyone! We really put it together win everything was on the line. It doesn't get any sweeter than winning both boys and girls league titles.

Girls:
WOW! we did not give anybody a chance to beat us today. Taking 6 of the top 9 spots tells the whole story (Total Domination!). We are by far the PAC 7 Champions with a very young team. We will only lose Karlee next year. Karlee cruised to a easy win and her first PAC 7 individual title (way to go!). The rest of the girls did a great job packing it up and finishing in less 30 seconds of each other for our 2nd through 6th runners. If we run like this the next couple of weeks we have a great shot at making it to State! Back to Back league champions is quite a honor!

Boys:
You guys really wanted to win! It was awesome to watch all of you run with heart. From the beginning are goal was to win league and you still did it through all of the obstacles you faced through out the season. That is what makes you guys true champions. Cullen, Hugo, Dan, Jose, Josh and Niko all put it on the line and left everything out there on the course. We raced every team man for man especially SLO and we were the ones who finished the strongest and wanted it the most. Way to FLY SKY HIGH EAGLES! Our next goal is to make it to CIF finals. We have a great chance. Great Job Fellas!

10/30/08 San Luis Obispo County Meet at Laguna Lake Park Course: 5K

Great Job Everyone! The whole team is back into the swing of things and running really well after a rocky performance at the Midseason Meet! I was really impressed with the way all us of finished strong in both races.

Girls:
We ran really well and up front we were a definte threat. We took 3rd place getting beat by Atascadero by 1 point 78-79. This is exciting, because we were minus 2 of our top 6 girls Haley MacDonald and Hannah Stevens. We had our top 4 girls in front of Atasacadero's #2 girl. This is awesome, because with Haley and Hannah racing, we would have had 5, maybe 6 girls in front of Atascadero's #2 girl. Those two girls will be back in action next week for the League Final Meet. Karlee ran really well up front taking runner up honors behind Jordan Hasay. karlee looked really strong and experienced in her last mile. Katie, McKenzie and Emily packed it up and looked really strong through out the race. They all finished really well, especially Emily with her crazy kick at the end passing up the Templeton girl.
Girls we are looking really good going into League Finals and CIF.
Grreat JOB!
Boys
The Boys are Back! Great Race Fellas! Cullen led the team to a 3rd place finish behind a strong Morro Bay squad and an suprisingly strong performance by SLO. The boys are really stepping it up with out our number 1 runner Hugo. Cullen ran a strong race running with the 2nd chase pack the whole race and then finishing strong. Dan and Josh ran great closing the gap on Cullen. Jose, Andres, and Niko ran really well finishing with in 9 seconds of each other. Fellas, I'm proud of the way you are running and acting like a team. We are putting it together at the right time. We just have to keep stepping it up each race to fill the void of not having Hugo. Great Job!

We have our good days and bad days! This day happened to be a not so good day for both boys and girls varsity squads. We had our top boy hurt (not race), we had someone real sick and we had others just have off days. It is better that this happen now then at the end of the season. Both squads are still in the hunt for the League Title.

Girls Varsity:
Took 2nd place to a tightly packed Atascadero team. we should have handled them no problem, but we just had a off day. Karlee Owens won the race individually. She hung with the front pack for the 1st 2 miles and then blasted a 5:35 3rd mile to win by 30 seconds. Emily Johnston also ran a great race to capture 6th place. Ladies shake this one off. We will come back next race healthier and stronger!

Varsity Boys:
We finished in a surprisingly 5th place. Cullen Cali had a great race holding down 5th place with a strong performance. The rest of the team had a off day, which hurt our team placing. Alot of other top teams had off days too, so we are still in the hunt for the league championship fellas! Lets focus on getting healthy and ready to run fast when it counts! Shake this one off!

What a smooth trip! The boys and girls teams both went and took care of business. We got to measure ourselves against local, southern section and state competition. We are looking pretty good so far! Things are starting to come together for both girls and boys teams. It was a great day for AG!

Girls Varsity

Karlee Owens led the girls team to a 2nd place finish in the Div. 2 Large Schools race, behind #2 ranked in the country and #1 ranked in the state Saugus. Karlee broke up the Saugus sweep taking 3rd place with a school record time over that course 18:20. She ran even splits for her 1st and second mile (5:51, 11:42), which is really hard to do, especially when a large hill is in the second mile. This is showing her true strength. The rest of our girls also rolled out! Freshman Hannah Stevens ran a quick 19:38 (Really fast for a freshman) followed by Junior McKenzie Goldman 19:41 (a 1 minute plus improvement from last year), Freshman Emily Johnston ran 20:01 (really fast for a freshman) and rounding out the scoring with her debut race was sophmore Haley MacDonald 20:35 (She made the big difference with our teams 2nd place finish). These girls are really putting it together and it will be even more exciting when Katie Lewis opens up at the midseason meet. Great Job Ladies!

Varsity boys

The boys really showed their strength today in the Div. 2 Large Schools race. Don't be fooled by their 12th place finish (they were in a very deep race). The boys had less than a 1 minute gap between our #1 runner Hugo Gutierrez and our #5 runner Jose Corona. We are starting to show our depth and the more tight we keep the gap, the more successful we are going to be. Junior Hugo led our team with a 16th place finish in a very fine time of 16:09 followed by Junior Cullen Cali 16:38 (he ran a great race, keep it up!) followed up by our tight pack of boys freshman Josh Davis 16:59, Junior Dan Smith 17:02, and Junior Jose Corona 17:07. These boys are starting to show that they really want it (to win and close the gap)! They went after it today (got out quickly) and held on through out the race to finish strong. We also beat rival Righetti, which is our goal every time we race them. Great Job Fellas!

10/4/08 Artichoke Invite at Half Moon Bay High School Course: 2.3 Miles

It was a great day up in Half Moon Bay. The weather cleared up and it ended up being a perfect day for running. This was a fun meet, because we went to a new place, ran against great bay area competition and had a relaxing trip in the charter bus with plenty of movies. Great Job everyone!

Girls Varsity: They had a great day with out #1 runner Karlee Owens who was having a great time taking her SAT subject matter tests. The girls held down 3rd place againt Bay Area talent Castro Valley. McKenzie Goldman, Hannah Stevens, and Emily Johnston all ran strong as a pack and finished with in 13 seconds of each other finishing in the top 15. In the next 2 weeks we will be having 2 other top girls from last year's team open up (Katie Lewis and Haley MacDonald). It will be exciting to see what this girls team can do. We will have a talented and strong pack of girls with Karlee leading the way.

Boys Varsity: They had a awesome day taking 4th place behind talented Bay area teams Castro Valley and St. Francis. Hugo Gutierrez led the way with another win going toe to toe with Castro Valleys #1 runner in the last 50 yards and outkicked him for the win. Hugo was in 4th place with less than a mile to go when they hit a very steep and long hill and worked his way up to 1st by the top. The rest of the bros got after it today and got out quick (they need to experience this in preperation for CIF) and it caught up with them towards the end, but they still finished tough. Cullen Cali led the pack with a 15th place finish and Dan Smith came in a few ticks behind him.

Our boys J.V. team finished 3rd place running really well. Niko Ostby led our team with a 5th place finish after stopping 200 meters early and then running again to finish. (he was a little confused about the finish line).

Dyestatcal Big Ditch Summary
BIG DITCH INVITATIONAL (Arroyo Grande) - Biddle Park-Talley Farms - 5k - Saturday, September 27th

Large and Small school groupings were held in this Arroyo Grande area meet that had about all Central Coastal area schools in attendance. The host AG group took the individual and team championships at the Large Schools level. Karlee Owens 18:53 continued her fine season with the win, with her Eagles 25 points for the win. Unfortunately, highly rated soph Jana Hayashi, who raced 18:01 for 9th at the SS DII Finals at Mt. SAC last November and 11:25 for 3200m in track has decided not to run this Fall, the area losing one tough little girl in the sport. Hugo Gutierrez (16:50) led the AG boys to their 30 poitns and win over Righetti with 39. Pepe Gonzalez, a tenth grader at Paso Robles, won the Small Schools contest at 16:50, with Cabrillo (Lompoc) the winners there wtih 45-46 over PR. Savannah Camacho (Templeton), one of the nation’s fine middle-school runners last summer with 2:15 (800) and 4:45 (1500) clockings in age-group action, took the Small School Girls’ run at 20:13. Atascadero took the Girls contest there over Templeton 30-34.

What a day! All of the AG runners ran great and we had lots of Parent help and Support at our home invite! We have a Great thing Going on Here! Thanks Parents! Everbody, thanks for sticking around and helping with the clean up!

Girls

Karlee continued with her winning streak running away with her 3rd victory of the season. She ran 18:53, which was the fastest time of the day by 1 min 20sec. The varsity girls capitalized and won easily! McKenzie Goldman (20:23) and Hannah Stevens (20:25) worked together the whole race and finished together. Emily Johnston (21:13) tried her best to fight off a stitch to finish as our number 4 girl (What a competitor!). We can't wait for Katie Lewis to come back Healthy and add that strength to our top 5 girls. Great Job Ladies!

Boys:

Hugo (16:50) ran a great race to fight off YOUNGBLOOD from Pioneer Valley to take the win for the day! Great Kick Hugo! Our pack of boys followed their race plan and finished all together in the same time (17:22) Josh Davis, Cullen Cali, and Dan Smith which helped secure our win against rival Righetti. Dan finished hard to catch up to the pack (way to go Dan!). Jose (17:46) also was our solid 5th man. Great Job Boys!
Pringlenator and Hannah Goldman were our top J.V. Finishers! Great Job!

Everybody should have felt tired, especially varsity, because this is the time of the season that we are putting in the most work. In the end it will be well worth it! Check out the results below and splits!

What a Trip! The Runners ran great, the weather was beautiful, and we got to enjoy a barbeque and take a dip in a pool. Great Job Everyone!
Girls: Karlee Owens was the highlight of the meet for us. She won the Senior girls race in the Large schools division beating a quality field and a runner from my old high school. She covered the 2.75 mile course in 15:40, which was the 4th fastest of the day and ranked 12th on the all-time list for the fastest senior girls in course history. This was a big win for Karlee going into her senior season, because she is learning how to race smart, cover moves and finish hard, which is key when competing against the best in the southern section and state. Freshman Emily Johnston and Hannah Stevens looked to easy cruising in together running 17:52 taking 12th and 13th place in a very fast freshman race. Junior McKenzie Goldman is back into the swing of things running 17:54 and finishing 31st in a deep junior race. We would of had a pack of 3 girls come in right together which is key for team scoring.
Boys: The junior boys were the highlight finishing in 4th place behind running powerhouses Poway, Dana Hills, and Mt. Carmel. Hugo led the way with a 4th place finish, while being sick covering the 2.95 mile course 16:14. He moved up from 10th place from the start to 4th by the end. He ran a very strong last half of the race also beating a runner from my old high school. Cullen Cali ran a great race with a 17:04 finish. He is starting off the season on a great note and healthy (he was hurt last year). Dan Smith was our next boy finishing in 17:30 followed by Juan Alvarez 17:43, Jose Corona 18:07 and Sean Pringle 18:09. These boys will really do some damage when they close the gap to Cullen. We have the next month to work on this. Josh Davis ran a solid 17:40 to finish in 12 place in a deep freshman boys race. He fell in the beginning doing a dive roll and scraping his back and shoulder on the side walk, but was able to take the punch, get up and get back into the race, which shows he has alot of potential.

What a great way to start the season! Everyone ran really Well! The varsity squad followed their plan and executed their tempo runs as planned! WE did not worry about team scores. The varsity boys packed it up and finished with in 34 seconds of each other. great job boys! Way to follow the plan and look and act like a team.
On the girls side we didn't run a full team due to injuries and sickness, but Karlee followed her plan of doing a tempo run right along with the leader and opening up 40 seconds on the 2nd place girl in the last 1/2 mile. Stud freshman Hannah and Emily worked together and came in neck to neck making it look to easy. Shanna and Sarah also followed the plan and worked together running really well.
The whole team looked awesome and represented AGHS well!

This past weekend we traveled to Paso Robles for The Bearcat Relays. The girls took 4th place overall and the boys placed 5th. The Girls 4x1600m relay won 1st place with solid early season performances by all of the girls (Christine, Mona, Katie, and Jana). Jana got a taste of the track in the Distance Medley, when a inexperienced Atascadero girl cut her off on the first lap and they both got tangled and fell. Jana walked away with some road rash. Hugo and Jose had great performances in the 4 x 1600m and Dan ran a nice early season P.R. in his 800m leg of the Distance Medley. Check out their splits below. Next up Righetti Dual at Righetti on Thursday.

2/28/08
Track Season is Under Way!!! The Girls Team beat Paso 79-57 and The boys fell to Paso 75-61. On the distance side, We had solid performances from Jana Hayashi winning the 3200m in 11:41 (not bad for her 1st ever track race with nobody pushing her). Mona ran great with two 2nd place finishes in the 1600m and the 800m. Hugo ran a solid 4:49 to take 3rd place against a strong Paso 1-2 punch. Jose Corona ran his heart out, running 11:16 in the 3200m and taking 3rd place. His mile splits were (5:40 and 5:36). This is awesome for someone who's 1 mile personal best was 5:48 last year. These are great performances for our distance squad who haven't done any track specific work outs yet. We have the rest of our distance squad joining us next week. Alot of people didn't run this week due to Health and Fitness reasons. Check out the links below for splits and a newpaper summary of the meet.

The last time was in 1997 and our girls team took 10th place and Nicole Tunnel made it to state individually. We ran very solid and have more room for improvement this weekend. It has also been 16 years since we made it to state (1991) where we placed 5th and Angela Orefice took 3rd running 18:13. The boys team ran very solid, with Hugo Guiterrez leading the way with a great sophmore time (16:10) for that course and also cracking our Mt. Sac top 10 list. the boys team will have a great season next year if they all stay on it. Click on the attachments below to check out the splits and the girls competition for CIF Finals.
